Sometimes we have problems in our family. Our kids are clearly going to need lots of orthodontia. Our house has lots of little broken things and we don’t have time to fix them; creaky doors, cracks in the plaster, one leaky shower. There are a few people at work I find difficult to get along with. However, we try to keep some perspective and appreciate our blessings, because there are plenty of people in the world who would love to have what we’re calling problems. There are people whose daily suffering is really beyond our imagination, and if we can do something to help them, we feel we should.
That’s why we give 10% of every purchase to a charity dedicated to helping people worldwide to survive and overcome their grinding poverty and hunger.
We’ve chosen an organization with over 60 years’ experience in helping those in desperate need, and with a history of spending over 90% of its funds to provide help. We donate ten percent of every purchase to CARE. CARE oversees about 800 poverty-fighting projects in 69 countries around the world, the majority of which are concentrated in the areas of health, education, economic development, nutritional support, agriculture, and natural resources. In each of these areas, CARE focuses on working with women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help their families and communities escape poverty. CARE provides health services to boost immunization rates and reduce maternal and child mortality. CARE’s education programs include literacy classes, teacher training, starting and nurturing parent groups, improvements to curriculums, and initiatives aimed at increasing enrollment rates for girls. CARE’s economic development projects are aimed at helping individuals, particularly women, increase income and access to credit by forming savings and loan associations and starting small businesses. Its nutritional support programs focus on the needs of young children, and pregnant and lactating mothers. Furthermore, CARE operates projects that help to improve agriculture and protect natural resources in areas such as kitchen gardens, irrigation, crop storage and soil conservation. CARE also has programs that improve access to water and information on hygienic behaviors, thus helping to reduce the occurrence of illnesses. In times of crisis, CARE provides humanitarian assistance to affected communities.
